Colegio De San Nicolas – The First University in the United States

San Nicolas, founded in its current state Michoacán, Mexico was the first university founded in all of America. Founded by Vasco de Quiroga, Real Colegio San Nicolas de Obispo opened its doors in 1540. Bishop Quiroga understood the need for basic addition, advanced education. He realized that most of the priests come in Mexico, did not speak indigenous languages.

School first proposed the establishment of hospitals. Colonial hospital had a dual role. Not only did they treat badly, they also basic education for young men.

Indigenous Pueblos responded by becoming an expert craftsmen and artisans. Today many Pueblos in Michoacán known for their specialized craft. For example, Santa Clara del Cobre produces exquisite copper ware, Quiroga is home to wood and leather workers, artists of Tocuaro produce some of the finest masks in the world and Paracho is known for stringed instruments.

In 1580, the college was transferred to the city of Valladolid (today Morelia), where it still operates today. Among alumnus are Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, who later became rector of the university and the father of Mexican independence and Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon, who took up the cause after the execution of Hidalgo.
