As colleges and universities continue to get more and more applications every year, they need to decide how they will choose their freshmen class from thousands of university applicants who apply. While grades in rigorous courses and test scores have always been important, you may be surprised to see some of the other factors and where they rank.
The National Association for College Admissions Committee Counseling (NACAC) recently released their annual survey of the factors colleges and universities consider most important when making college. This survey gives students a chance to see what factors have become more or less important in the college admission process process. It also helps students see how realistic their credentials compared to other applicants, universities may compete against.
The factors that colleges are important for college admissions are the result of NACAC survey is sent to all the member colleges and universities. It is important to note that each of these factors may be considered differently by schools
The results are as follows :.
1. Grades College Prep courses: 83.4%
2. Strength of curriculum: 65.7%
3. Admission test scores (SAT and ACT): 59.3%
4th grades in all courses: 46.2%
5. essay or writing sample: 26.6%
6. Be interested student: 23%
7. Class website: 21.8%
8. Advisor recommendation: 19.4%
9. Proposals Teacher: 19%
10. IB or AP subject test scores: 9.6%
11. College interview: 9.2%
12. Activities: 7.4%
13. Portfolio: 5.9%
14. SAT II scores: 5.3%
15 State graduation exam: 4.2%
We can probably assume that more private colleges than public ones responded to this survey. Since access to many public schools is based more on grades and test scores, some other factors may not post worth. Private schools usually assess each college application a little better, with many members of the college admissions committee comments and criticism and help to make the final decisions.
The information from this survey is particularly important for students who are starting their high school career. It allows them to know what to expect so they can plan ahead. This way they will not be disappointed that the older that they did not take the right course, prepare for the SAT and ACT, or display shown interest that has gained more weight than any other aspect of NACAC survey.
